Hi there! I was inspired by mosaic crochet and I started to try it. It’s so much fun that I turned it into a pattern for a pillow cover. Actually 2, an easy one and a bit more difficult. In this pattern I will explain how the easier pattern works and in a next pattern the more advanced version will be available.

Materials

  • Natural cotton worsted sponsored from Ice Yarns. I used 4 skeins of light camel, 1 skein of baby pink and 1 skein of burgundy
  • G/6 4 mm crochet hook
  • Pillow 40×40 cm or 15.5×15.5”
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Terms used/abbreviations

Ch                     chain
Drop down dc      double crochet in the front loop of the previous round.
Sc blo               single crochet in back loop only

Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • The pattern is worked in the rows. The yarn is cut at the end of every row. You start a new row always at the same side.
  • All single crochets are worked in the back loop only.
  • All double crochets are worked in the front loops of the previous row.
  • Colors B and C are just worked in sc blo. Color A also has drop down dc.

Special stitch

Drop down dc: Yarn over, insert your hook from bottom to top through the front loop of the sc of the round below. Yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through the last two loops on your hook.

Pattern

Row 1: in color A. Start with a sc foundation chain in multiples of 6 for the width that you want. My pillow is 40 cm/15.5” wide so I made my foundation chain this length. It was 78 stitches. If you want to learn how to make a single crochet foundation chain then you can click on this link https://2loopz.com/how-to-make-a-single-crochet-foundation-chain/
If you are new to crochet or just don’t like to start with a foundation chain, then you can make a normal chain and work a row of sc on top and start row 2 from there. Cut your yarn and bind off a the end of the row.

Row 2: start at the beginning of the row again in color B. Don’t turn your work. Ch 1, sc blo in every stitch across. Cut your yarn and bind off. You cut and bind off every row and start the new row in a new color on the beginning of the row.

Row 3: color A, ch 1, *sc blo in the first 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next, sc blo in the next, drop down dc in the next*. Repeat until the end of the row.

Row 4: color B, ch 1, sc blo in every stitch across.

Row 5: color A, ch 1, *drop down dc in the first st, sc blo in the next 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next, sc blo in the next*. Repeat between the * until the end.

Row 6: color B, ch 1, sc blo in every stitch across.

Row 7: color A, ch 1, *sc blo in the first stitch, drop down dc in the next, sc blo in the next 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next*. Repeat between the * until the end.

Row 8: color C, ch 1, sc blo in every stitch across.

Row 9: color A, ch 1, *sc blo in the first 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next stitch, sc blo in the next, drop down dc in the next*. Repeat between the * until the end.

Row 10: color C, ch 1, sc blo in every stitch across.

Row 11: color A, ch 1, *drop down dc in the first st, sc blo in the next 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next, sc blo in the next*. Repeat between the * until the end.

Row 12: color C, ch 1, sc blo in every stitch across.

Row 13: color A, ch 1, *sc blo in the first stitch, drop down dc in the next, sc blo in the next 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next*. Repeat between the * until the end.

Repeat rows 2-13 until you reached the height you want.

Weave in all of your ends.

You can make the back exactly the same or just use color A and make a single crochet foundation chain the same length as the front and work rows of sc on top until you reach the same height as the front.

Lay the two panels on top of each other, right sides in. Sew the two parts together with a whip stitch or make sc to crochet them together. Leave an opening for about 15 cm. or 6”. Turn the work right sides out and put your pillow in. Close the hole with whip stitches. Cut your yarn, bind off and weave in your ends.

Grab a good book and a cup of coffee and snuggle up on the couch with your pillow!
