Spikey Socks

Get comfy and warm with these two-colored Spikey Socks. You can make them in any size you want, they are warm and cozy, look nice and they are also very easy to make.
Materials
- 2 colors of a number 3 yarn of your choice. I used about 170 meters or 186 yards. This is enough for a shoe size 8/8,5 or 39/40, if you want to go bigger you probably need an extra skein.
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Some stitch markers
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Terms used/abbreviations
Ch chain
St stitch
Sc single crochet
Sc Blo single crochet in the back loop only
Sc2tog single crochet 2 stitches together

Special stitches
Spike stitch instead of inserting your hook into the top loops of the stitch (the V), insert your hook into its base. Then finish as a normal single crochet.

Notes

- The rounds aren’t closed.
- A chain 1 at the beginning of a row/round doesn’t count as a stitch.
Pattern

Toe
Ch 9. For narrow or wide feet start with more or less stitches. You need to cover the top of your 4 small toes.
Round 1: Skip the 1st chain. Sc in the next 7 stitches (or in every stitch across until you have 1 stitch left). In the last stitch you make 4 sc (you work around the corner to the other side), mark the 2nd one with a stitch marker. Make 7 sc on the other side of the chain. Make 4 sc in the last ch to complete your round and mark the 2nd one with a stitch marker. If you started with the same amount of stitches as I did then you have 22 stitches. Don’t close your round and don’t turn your work.
Round 2: sc in 1st stitch and in every stitch across until you reach the stitch with the stitch marker. Take out the stitch marker and in that stitch you make 2 sc, mark the 2nd stitch with the stitch marker. In the next stitch you make as well 2 sc. Sc in every stitch across until you reach the other stitch marker. Take it out and make 2 sc in that stitch. Replace the stitch marker in the 2nd stitch. Make 2 sc in the next stitch to complete your round.
Round 3 and 4: Repeat round 2 until the width of your 5 toes is covered. If you need more or less rounds to cover them then make more or less rounds.
Foot
Round 5: Make 1 sc in every stitch around, you can take out the stitch markers and mark the 1st stitch so you know where you’ve started every round. Don’t bind off but pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Round 6: Insert hook into next sc (the first of the round) attach color 2 and ch 1. Spike stitch in every st around. Don’t close the round, pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Round 7: Reinsert the hook into the loop of color 1. Sc in the top of each spike stitch. Don’t close the round, pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Round 8: Reinsert the hook into the loop of color 2. Spike stitch in every sc around. Don’t close the round, pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Repeat rounds 7 and 8 until your work reaches your heel and the front of your ankle. You can bind off the 2nd color or you can leave it attached so you can start working with it for the top of the sock.

Heel
Flatten out your sock and attach stitch markers in the corners. Count your stitches in between the stitch markers and write that down for the other sock. I have 19 stitches including the 2 stitch markers. If your grey yarn isn’t at the side already then make sl st until you reach the stitch marker.
Row 1: ch 1, sc in every stitch across including the stitches with the stitch markers.
Row 2: ch 1, turn your work and sc in every stitch across.
Repeat row 2 until the whole heel is covered.
Bind off, leave a long enough tail (about 10 inches or 25 cm.) to close the heel.
Close the heel with the tail end and a yarn needle.
Top
Attach the 1st yarn (grey) in the stitch in front of the 2nd yarn at the side of the sock. If you’ve bind off that yarn then attach it in front of where you binded off.
Round 1: Ch 1. Make 1 sc in every stitch around and for the heel you can make 1 stitch for every row or 2 for every 3 rows. If you use every row then the top of your sock will be loose, if you use 2 for every 3 rows the top will be more fitted. I have 21 sc on the heel part, just eyeball and see what you like most. Don’t bind off but pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Round 2: Insert hook into next sc (the first of the round) attach color 2 and ch 1 or pick up color 2 then don’t ch 1. Spike stitch in every st around. Don’t close the round, pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Round 3: Reinsert the hook into the loop of color 1. Sc in the top of each spike stitch. Don’t close the round, pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Round 4: Reinsert the hook into the loop of color 2. Spike stitch in every sc around. Don’t close the round, pull up a loop and remove the hook.
Repeat rounds 3 and 4 until your work reaches half an inch under the height you like. You can adjust the width of the top in the rounds where you make the sc by sc2tog or 2sc in one stitch.
Finish off color 2. Weave in the end with the tapestry needle.
Sc 4 rounds in every st around with color 1. Sl st in the first sc to close the round.
Cut your yarn, bind off and weave in your ends. And now it’s time to put them on and curl up on the couch with your favorite series.
