Hi there! In this tutorial I will teach you how to make a crochet trinity box with a lid around a cardboard box. Here you can store all your crochet items or the small items that are always lying around. It’s an easy pattern again, so easy to follow and replicate.

Let’s start!

Materials

– 3 skeins of Ice Yarns Saver in the color Dark Camel (or any number 4 yarn you like).
– 6 mm. J/10 hook
– a cardboard box 30x30x30 cm or 12x12x12”
– a piece of cardboard with the same size as the bottom of the cardboard box
– a stitch marker
– a pair of scissors
– a tapestry needle

Notes

This pattern is written in US terms.

Special stitch

Sc3tog: Start the stitch in the same stitch as where the previous stitch is worked. Insert your hook, yarn over, pull up a loop. Insert in the next stitch, pull up a loop, insert in the next stitch, pull up a loop. You have 4 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

Pattern

Bottom:

Make a hdc foundation chain for the width of the bottom of your box. Make sure it is an uneven number. I started with 35 stitches. If you don’t like to start with a hdc foundation chain, you can also make 37 chains and work from the 3rd ch from the hook a row of hdc on top. In the end you have 35 stitches as well.
Row 1: ch 2, turn your work. Make a hdc in every stitch across.

Repeat row 1 until your bottom is the same size as the bottom of your cardboard box.
Leave your yarn attached.

Sides:

Row 1: ch 1, turn your work. Sc in the 1st stitch. Sc3tog (see instructions above) starting in the same stitch as the previous sc. Ch 1, sc3tog cluster starting in the same stitch as the last leg of the previous sc3tog. Repeat until the end of the row, you don’t make a ch 1 after the last sc3tog but make a sc in the last stitch (35).

Row 2: ch 1, turn your work. Sc in 1st stitch. Sc3tog Cluster starting in same stitch as previous sc and then continuing in the top of the next cluster and ch 1 space. Ch 1, sc3tog cluster starting in the same stitch of the last leg of previous sc3tog. Repeat until the end, don’t make a ch 1 after the last sc3tog. Sc in the last stitch.

Repeat row 2 until the height of the side of the cardboard box. Bind off and weave in the end.

Turn your work a quarter turn so that you can work along the side of the bottom. This side don’t have stitches to work in because it is the side, but you need to make the same amount of stitches as the other side (35), if you have a square box, or you need to have to cover the width of the box.

Repeat the steps on the other 2 sides.

Decide what will be your outside and turn the outside towards you. Fold the sides and make sl st to close the sides. Bind off and weave in the ends. Turn your work right side out. Put in your cardboard box. You can glue the work to the box, but this is optional.

This part is done.

Lid:

Chain 36 stitches.

Row 1: Make a sc in the 2nd stitch from the hook. Sc3tog starting in the same stitch as the previous sc.

Repeat row 2 until you can cover the piece of cardboard. I made 30 rows to accomplish that.
For the side of the lid, ch 2 and turn your work. Mark the first stitch with a stitch marker so you know where a new round starts.

Round 1: Work a hdc in every stitch and in every row around. Eyeball where you need to place your stitches on the sides so you end up with the same amount of stitches every side. I have 35 stitches per side. Don’t close the round.

Round 2: make a hdc in every stitch around.

Repeat round 2 until the side is about 5 cm. or 2 inches and then make a sc in the next stitch and a sl st in the next. Bind off and weave in the end. Put in your piece of cardboard, you can use some glue to secure it and your lid is done.

Handles (optional):

The last step is to make handles.

Ch 16, hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in every stitch across. Or make a hdc foundation chain of 15 stitches.

Bind off and weave in the end. Make another one.

Sew the handles to the side of the box and that’s it.

You can put in your crochet stuff or just stuff what needs a place out of sight.
